Border Patrol – A
weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands
Craig
Revelle – August 8, 2010
It
is hard to believe that July is over with, and we are now into the final full
month of the season for points at all of our local tracks.
Sure, there are races after Labor Day weekend, but the overall track
championships are the goals for most teams going into the season, and they will
be decided in less than a month.
Since last week’s column, I attended the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series race in Fulton, New York. Despite the nearly two-hour delay due to weather, the show went on, and it was 20 time World of Outlaws Champion Steve Kinser in victory lane at the end of the night. Kinser finished ahead of Jason Sides, Craig Dollansky, Kraig Kinser and Sam Hafertepe Jr. With the rain making the track super fast early on, Hafertepe Jr., also set a new Fulton Speedway track record.
The weekend began with a
full show of racing at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, New
York on Friday night. The King of
the North Country Series for the Sportsman and Street Stocks were joined by
regular show for the Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, Thunder Cars, and
the Mod Lites.
In the Modified feature,
Rob Bellinger held off Billy Dunn for his second straight win and third of the
season. A strong Small Block
contingent made up the rest of the top five with Lafargeville, New York resident
Zach Aubertine finishing third, and was the top Small Block in the field.
Matt Billings finished fourth and Tim O’Brien competed the top five.
In the Sportsman feature,
Matt Hulsizer picked up the win over Beth Schneider. Mike Mainse, only having just a couple starts at Can Am came
from the back to finish third. Brandon
Hagan and Joe Cook finished fourth and fifth respectively. With a third place finish for Mainse, he moved into the lead
in the Sportsman King of the North Country Series, with just one race remaining
at Brockville the following night.
Taylor Caprara won his
first Street Stock race of the season, JJ Courcy won the IMCA Modified feature.
Both Lee Gill and Zak Petrie continued their domination of their respective Late
Model and Thunder Car divisions, and Rich Rainville was the Mod Lite feature
winner.
At Brockville on Saturday
night, it was a night of firsts, as both the Modified and Sportsman winners won
their first ever features at the BOS in their divisions, and for Aikens, it was
the first Sportsman feature win of his career.
In the Modifieds, it was Tim O’Brien picking up the win over Kyle
Dingwall, Pat O’Brien, Gage Morin and Bobby Herrington.
The Sportsman first time winner was Dana Aikens, a three-year veteran of
the class, picked up the popular win. Aikens
led all 25 laps, and was also crowned King of the North Country Sportsman series
champion. Aikens held off challenges by Dylan Evoy, and then Chris
Herbison. Herbison finished in
second, Evoy third, Chris Raabe was fourth, and Mike Mainse finished in fifth.
Todd Raabe won the Street
Stock main event, which also gave him the win in the King of the North Country
Street Stock Series. Nolan Swamp
won the 4cylinder “rookie” feature.
The Cornwall Motor Speedway
also had a full show scheduled on Sunday evening, but Mother Nature had other
plans, as rain most of the day forced track officials to cancel the show early
Sunday afternoon.
Plenty of big events
highlight the remainder of August at all local tracks.
Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park host the first annual Chapman’s Can
Am Froggy Jam on August 22nd. Tickets
for this event, featuring Gretchen Wilson, Jamey Johnson, Chris Cagle and Easton
Corbin are just $50 and can be purchased at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park
on race nights, at various stores in Watertown area, or right from the Can Am
website, www.canammotorsports.com.
Brockville has a big race
this coming Thursday night, August 12th, with an appearance of the
O’Reilly All Star Late Models. The
Sportsman and Street Stocks will join the Late Models on the evening’s
schedule. Cornwall has a few weeks
of racing left before the season ends Labor Day weekend, which will be a 100 lap
358 Modified DIRTcar Series race.
