Border Patrol – A weekly Look At Racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands

Craig Revelle – July 26, 2009

As the summer months progress, the constant theme has been rain, and once again this weekend, my plans have been dictated by the weather.  Friday night, I traveled to the Can Am Motorsports Park with a gloomy forecast in sight, I crossed the river and hoped for the best.   Saturday evening, Brockville Speedway had a full schedule, with features from the July 11th rainout on tap before the regularly scheduled event.

Friday night, the Can Am Motorsports Park was the destination of choice as the Big Block/Small Block Modifieds, Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, Street Stocks, and Thunder Cars were joined by the Mid State Vintage Stock Car Club for their maiden appearance at the track.  The Modified feature was won by Justin Haers from Phelps, New York, followed by Billy Dunn, Lance Willix, Jimmy Phelps and Chris Higgins.  The Sportsman feature was won by Josh Van Brocklin, holding off a late race challenge from rising teenage star Matt Billings from Brockville, Ontario.  Matt Hulsizer, Tom Conklin, and Brandon Sweet rounded out the top five.  Dale Caswell won the Pro Late Model feature as well as the IMCA Modified main event.    Dave Mannise won the street stock feature, and Rob Martin and Ray Bechler split the 2 Thunder Car feature events.

Saturday night, at the Paul Kirkland owned Brockville Ontario Speedway, the forecast had once again looked unpleasant.  Race fans had one eye on the track and one eye on the dark clouds above.  The night started out with feature events from the July 11th rainout.  The Street Stocks, Sportsman, and Modifieds all had feature events to run before the evening’s schedule programs took precedence.  Smith Falls, Ontario racer Brock Cullen, won the Street Stock feature event, holding off Dominic Gauvreau, Danny Mocibob, Guy Amesse and Bill Code.  Cullen, who just recently had to swap motors after blowing his primary motor a few weeks ago picked up his second win of the season.

The Sportsman feature was up next, and it was Sheldon Hoogwerf picking up the popular win.  Hoogwerf held of several charges from teenagers Luke Whitteker and then Matt Billings to pick up his first checkered flag of the season.  Billings crossed the line in second, Whitteker was third, followed by Dylan Evoy and Randy Gaudet.

The Modified feature was next to take center stage, and it was Danny Obrien coming from deep in the field to make a dramatic last lap pass on Ryan Poole on the last corner of the last lap to take the win.  Poole, who was trying to hold off Obrien for his first win ended up spinning as he tried to defend the lead.  Kyle Dingwall, Adam Moore, Tim Obrien and John Mulder avoided the spinning Poole car and captured the remaining top five positions.

Next weekend will consist of the usual Friday night stop at the Can Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, New York followed by a 100 lap Lucas Oil Canadian DIRT Challenge Series Event at the Brockville Ontario Speedway.  This series will also be in action on Thursday evening at the newly refurbished Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York.

It will be a busy week for some local race teams, as there is a Small Block Modified Mr. DIRTcar Series event sandwiched between the two Canadian Series events.  Ransomville Speedway, located near Niagara Falls, New York will host the next round of the tour.  Several area drivers will be making the haul from the area including Danny Obrien, Todd Stewart, and Bobby Herrington.
