Border Patrol – A weekly Look At Racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands

Craig Revelle – June 14, 2009

My weekend of racing began Friday evening at the Can Am Motorsports Park, as I crossed the border and headed to Lafargeville, New York.  On Saturday, Brockville Ontario Speedway was the place to be, as they had Mother Nature on their side, and the rain stayed away.  On Sunday I headed to the Cornwall Motor Speedway for their show, which featured “Loonie-Toonie”, and a very affordable 2-dollar grandstand admission.

On Friday evening, the Can Am Motorsports Park was the destination of choice as they hosted the Big Block/Small block Modifieds, Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Crate Late Models, and thunder cars.

The Big Block/Small block Modified event was fantastic, as Frank Caprara and Billy Dunn battled for the top spot through out most of the 30 lap event.  Caprara was the winner with Dunn crossing the finish line in second place.  Lafargeville native Scott Parliament was third followed by Lance Willix and Ted Lamb.

The Sportsman feature was next, and 24 cars rolled off the starting grid for their 25-lap event.  Second-generation driver Josh VanBrocklin picked up his first win of the season, holding off a hard charging group of early season winners Matt Hulsizer, Matt Billings, Sammy Reakes, and Chris Raabe.

Dale Caswell was the winner of the GM crate engine powered Late Model class.  Phil Walker won his first feature of the season in the street stocks, and Ray Bechler won a pair of features in the Thunder car division.

Saturday afternoon, rain appeared to be a major concern, as much of the area was being hit with an unexpected afternoon rain.  Optimism returned as I got closer to the track, and the roads were dry, and the rain stayed to the south of the Speedway.

The first feature event on the schedule was the 4cylinder “rookie” division.  It appeared that it was going to be a night to remember for the Lansdowne duo of Steve Barber and Frank Mitchell as they ran first and second for much of the event.  Unfortunatley for Mitchell, on lap 12 of the 16 lap event, something in the rear of the car broke, nearly sending him into a violent flip over the banking in turn 2.  The car did remain on all 4 wheels, but suffered heavy damage.  Barber went on to win over, Chris Bakker, Ron Day Carl Gorry and Gerry Oszczakiewicz.  Josh Kirkland, Steve Barber, and Ron Day were the winners of the qualifying races earlier in the evening.

The Sportsman feature was up next, and they were running the first of 3 events in the LUCAS OIL series.  26 cars took the green flag, as Shane Pecore and Matt Billings led the field at the start of the 40-lap event.  At the checkered, it was an unfamiliar face in victory lane, as Sammy Reakes moved up from his 5th place starting position and picked up the win.  Reakes, a regular racer at the Fulton Speedway on Saturday nights made his inaugural trip to Brockville a memorable one, as he picked up the win.  Matt Billings was a very strong second, and if it wasn’t for a series of late race cautions, Billings may have won his second feature in a row at the BOS.  Chris Herbison, Randy Gaudet and Adam Turner rounded out the top 5.  Shane Pecore, Matt Billings and Roger Varacalli picked up the wins in the earlier qualifying races.

“If anyone was going to go by me, they were going to have to move me out of the bottom groove, and I knew Matt wouldn’t do that, he is a good clean racer”, says race winner Reakes about runner-up finisher Billings.

The Modified feature was next to hit the high banked quarter mile oval.  Andy Lloyd and John Mulder led the field to the green flag for the 30-lap event.  At the checkered flag it was Danny Obrien picking up the win, his third victory in just four events of 2009 at the BOS.  Danny’s brother Pat Obrien moved up from his 11th place starting position and secured the second position.  Adam Moore, last week’s winner Todd Stewart from his 14th place starting position, and Kyle Dingwall completed the top 5.   Modified heat race winners were Kyle Dingwall, Ryan Poole, and Bill Gill.

The popular Street Stock class was next up, and Jack Code and Brian Billings filled the front row starting positions as the green flag waived.  At the finish, it was 2008 champion Steve Billings picking up his first win of 2009.  Billing’s made a last lap pass on opening night winner Nicholas Gauvreau to pick up the win.  Yves Vendette was third followed by Brock Cullen and Kevin Jodoin.

On Sunday, the Cornwall Motor Speedway was the place to be.  The 2-dollar admission price filled the grandstands.  Alain Boisvert was the winner of the Modified feature.  Joel Doiron, Perry Francis, Carey Terrance and Laurent Ladouceur completed the top 5.

Next week will be a big week for area racing fans.  It all starts off on Friday night at the Can Am Motorsports Park for their regular night of racing.  The action will then shift back to Brockville for their full Steve Polite Sand and Gravel sponsored racing program plus the McNamee Concrete Vintage Modifieds, and the ever-popular Spectator Bag Race that puts the driver in his/her car with a paper bag over their head, and a passenger in the back seat giving the directions.  This event has become a fan favorite for the Brockville Ontario Speedway.  On Sunday, Cornwall Speedway will host their biggest event of 2009 as the World of Outlaw Late Models make their northern swing.  Racing action continues into Monday, as the same World of Outlaw Late Models invade the Can Am Motorsports Park for the first time ever.  This weekend will also mark the return of fan favorite Tim McCreadie who was injured in a racing accident in January at an indoor event in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
