Border Patrol – A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands

Craig Revelle – June 20, 2010

It was another busy weekend with weekly visits to Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park, Brockville Ontario Speedway, and Cornwall Motor Speedway.  Can Am hosted a SUNY Canton Series, and Cornwall welcomed the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.

On Friday night at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, New York, it was a night to remember for Lafargeville native Zach Aubertine, after picking up his first ever 358 Modified win at his hometown track.  It is always nice to see a new face in victory lane, and for Aubertine, it was well-deserved win, finishing ahead of future DIRTcar Motorsports Hall of Fame driver Danny O’Brien.  Luke Whitteker was third, Jeremy Wilder was fourth and Tim O’Brien completed the top five.

The Sportsman feature event was won by a hard charging Matt Hulsizer.  Josh Van Brocklin was second, and Brandon Hagan finished in third. Jeff Stevenson and Shane Pecore finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Lee Gill was the winner in the Crate Late Model division.  After the race, track General Manager Chip Burdick offered a challenge to other Late Model teams to step up and beat Gill, who has won six of the eight features so far this season.  If another driver beats Gill next week, they will receive a $500 bonus, with the only stipulation being that Gill must finish on the lead lap.

Other winners at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park include JJ Courcy in the IMCA Modified division.  Kevin Smith was the Pure Stock winner, OJ White was the Thunder Car feature winner and Kyle Simpson won the 40 lap, $1000 to win Enduro race at the conclusion of the night.

Saturday night at the Brockville Ontario Speedway, it was an O’Brien sweep of the top three positions, with Danny capturing the win over older brother Pat.  Tim O’Brien completed the family podium.  Bobby Herrington finished fourth and Stephane Lafrance finished fifth.

Chris Raabe won the Sportsman feature, but he had to work for it, passing Lansdowne, Ontario racer Josh Kane just past the halfway point of the race.  Kane picked up his best finish in the Sportsman class with a strong second place effort, and Chris Herbison was third.  Jessica Power finished fourth, also posting her best finish in the Sportsman class, and Randy Earl rounded out the top five.

The Mod Lites made their second ever appearance to the BOS, and Paul Klager picked up the win over Adam Murphy and Ray Sliter.

Other winners at the BOS include Wayne Riddell in the Vintage Modifieds, Kevin Fetterly in the Street Stocks and Jean Marc Larose in the 4cylinder Thunder Cars.

The weekend continued at the Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday as they hosted the World of Outlaws Late Model Series along with a regular show of Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Semi Pro and Mini Stocks.

The driver known as the Kentucky Colonel, Steve Francis picked up the 50-lap feature event.  Francis, of Ashland, Kentucky started from the front row and led every lap of the event.  Fellow Kentucky native Darrel Lanigan was second, Tim Fuller was third, Billy Decker fourth and Delaware’s Austin Hubbard finished fifth.

In the Modified Feature, Laurent Ladouceur picked up the popular win over Kyle Dingwall, Danny O’Brien, Yan Bussiere and Luke Whitteker

Also winning at Cornwall on Sunday night was “The Bulldog” Dave Bissonnette in the Pro Stocks, Kevin Fetterly for the second night in a row was the Street Stock winner and Marc Usereau won the Mini Stock main event.

My weekend starts early, or perhaps doesn’t stop as the summer heats up, and the mid week special events start to make their way into my racing itinerary.  Tuesday night, the Brewerton Speedway takes their turn to host the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.  On Wednesday, Mohawk International Raceway will open their doors to the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series as well as a Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series event.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be the usual stops at Can Am, Brockville and Cornwall.
