Border Patrol – A weekly Look At Racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands

Craig Revelle – May 24, 2010

It was a great Victoria Day Weekend here north of the border, as sunny skies and warm temperatures led to some exciting racing at many area tracks.  Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park was my Friday night destination, and then Brockville Speedway on Saturday night, and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday for their 100 lap Canadian Nationals.

Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park presented a regular night of racing on Friday night, consisting of Big and Small Block Modifieds, Sportsman, Late Models, Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Thunder Cars.  116 racecars signed into the pit area Friday night, and put on a great show for the fans.  All the hard work that everyone at Can Am has done to help promote the track with new ownership at Can Am has paid off, as they continue to get a great turnout of fans each week.

Steve Paine won the Modified feature at Can Am, but not after some heated battles with small block contenders Matt Billings and Tim O’Brien.  The Small Blocks are at a noticeable disadvantage, but when the track gets dry and slick like it did on Friday night, it tends to level out the playing field, and we may happen to see a Small Block Modified in victory lane at some point this year ahead of their Big Block counterparts.  Paine was the winner, Billy Dunn finished second followed by Lance Willix. Tim O’Brien was the top Small Block, finishing fourth.  Jason Potter rounded out the top five.

Jordan McCreadie, son of legendary Big Block Modified star “Barefoot” Bob McCreadie led much of the Sportsman feature at Can Am on Friday night.  He was eventually passed by race winner Matt Hulsizer, but for McCreadie, this was just his fourth career start in any type of racing, and proved that he is a quick learner.  It won’t be long before we see him pick up his first win.  Josh Van Brocklin finished second, Tom Conklin was third, McCreadie finished fourth and Beth Schneider was fifth.

Ryan Scott continued his domination of the IMCA Modified class.  Scott, of Kingston, Ontario has won all four IMCA features of the season at Can Am, and looks like he could easily go on to win many more before the season is over.  Brandon Kidd and car owner Lee Gill had the field covered in the Crate Late Model division, nearly lapping the rest of the field.  Kidd finished ahead of Gill at the finish.  Mike White was the Street Stock winner, Kevin Smith was the Pure Stock victor and Ray Bechler won the Thunder Car feature.

Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park announced this week that they will host a concert this summer feature country music start Gretchen Wilson.  Wilson will be joined by Chris Cagle, Jamey Johnson and Easton Corbin for the first annual Can Am Froggy Jam that will be held on Sunday, August 22nd.  Go to www.canammotorsports.com for more details.  Tickets will be available for purchase on the website on June 1st.

The Brockville Ontario Speedway was back in action on Saturday night, with their weekly racing program, including the season debut of the Vintage class, which has increased in popularity, with many new cars their on their first night of racing.

The Modified feature was won by Brian “Slim” McDonald, he had a hard charging Pat O’Brien behind him, and with an extra couple laps may have been able to spoil McDonald’s victory party.  Bobby Herrington finished 3rd, Todd Stewart was 4th and Tim O’Brien completed the top five.

The Sportsman feature was a classic, and had the packed Brockville Ontario Speedway crowd on their feet for most of the race, as Randy Earl and Adam Turner ran side by side for much of the race, with Chris Raabe coming from near the back of the field to also challenge for the win late in the race.  Raabe got by Earl at one point, but Earl fought back and would also regain the lead from Turner.  Earl and Turner shared the lead in the last 5 laps, and at the checkered flag it was Adam Turner picking up his first win of the season.  It was an emotional win for Turner and his family, as it was Victoria Day weekend, just four years ago that Adam lost his brother Justin in a tragic accident.  There are lots of great people in the racing community, and the Turner family is included.  Earl finished second.  Chris Raabe finished third, Shane Pecore and Dave Wilgosh were fourth and fifth respectively.

Cole Dingwall was the winner in the Vintage division.  Derek Cryderman won the Street Stock main event, and Chris Lloyd picked up the win in the 4cylinder “Rookie” division.

Sunday was a great day of racing at the Cornwall Motor Speedway.  It was a 100 lap special for the Small Block Modifieds.  The Canadian Nationals, featuring some of the top Small Block competitors from Ontario, Quebec and New York State.  It was also a 50 Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock tour race.  Sportsman and Mini Stock were also on the schedule

Brett Hearn made a surprise appearance at Cornwall on Sunday, and as always when Hearn comes to visit he puts on a great show, and this was no exception as he battled Clement Therrien through lapped traffic to pick up the win.  Therrien finished second, Carey Terrance was third, David Hebert was fourth and Mario Clair rounded out the top five.

Chris Raabe wont the sportsman feature, but not without a fight from last week’s winner Chris Herbison.  Herbison was right on Raabe’s back bumper as they crossed the finish line.  Brent Kelsey was third, Randy Earl finished fourth and Bruno Lepage completed the top five spots.

Todd Stewart was the big winner Friday night at Mohawk Raceway, and Stephane Lafrance picked up the win at Edelweiss Speedway, also on Friday night.  It was a much-needed win for both drivers that have been bitten by bad luck at other tracks early in the 2010 season.

Next weekend, Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park will host a Memorial Day Weekend special on Friday night.  The SUNY Canton 358 Modified Series, SUNY Canton/Dig Safely New York Sportsman Series, and the SUNY Canton/Dig Safely New York Street Stocks will all be in action along with the Thunder Cars and Pure Stocks.

Brockville will continue to be the place to be on Saturday nights, and they will host a regular night of racing featuring Small Block Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Rookies, as well as a 20 lap Enduro at the end of the night.

Cornwall Speedway will host a regular show as well next Sunday night, and it will be driver autograph night, giving young race fans a chance to meet and get photos and autographs of their favorite drivers.

For anyone interested in the Vintage Modifieds, or the history racing in our area, take a minute to check out www.speedwaynostalgia.com.  There are many great photos, and lots of information on the history of Brockville, Cornwall and Can Am Speedway, as well as the older track like Kingston Speedway, Watertown, Fort Covington and many more.
