Border Patrol – A weekly Look At Racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands

Craig Revelle – May 31, 2009

For the third weekend in the month of May, weather once again played a major factor in my weekend of racing as heavy rains during the week, ending Friday morning forced the track crew at Can-Am Motorsports Park to call their racing show because the track was under water.  With Can-Am being cancelled just after noon hour on Friday, my focused shifted to plan b, which was the season opening race at the newly revamped Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York.  Unfortunately, due to the heavy rains from earlier, they too had to postpone their program.

Saturday morning, we once again seen heavy rainfall, and feared the worst, until rain gave away to bright sunshine Saturday afternoon.  Paul Kirkland and the Brockville Speedway track crew did a wonderful job once again getting the track into shape for the scheduled racing program sponsored by Kemptville Truck Center.  The night was also a racing against drugs winner’s night, promoted through area schools, giving young kids free tickets to the race, and a VIP pit tour before the racing program got underway.  The night would see a mixture of experienced veterans, raring youngsters, and first time winners once the lights were turned out at the end of the night.

The first feature of the evening was the ever-popular 4cylinder “rookie” division.  Lansdowne racing contingent Steve Barber and Frank Mitchell shared row 5 at the green flag.  Barber quickly worked his way to the front, making daring 3-wide moves as he battled his way through the field.  Gerry Oszczakiewicz was also working his way the field, and took the lead on lap 12 of the 16-lap event.  Barber and Oszczakiewicz put on a fantastic battle, and on the final lap both drivers had victory in their sights, as Barber looked to take the lead as they were given the white flag.  On the final lap, contact was made, clearing the way to victory for the driver known as Gerry O, his second win of the season.  Chris Bakker finished second, followed by Benoit Larouche, and Ronnie Tyo.  Steve Barber limped home to a 5th place finish, after the last lap contact with Oszczakiewicz.  Frank Mitchell had to settle for 14th after suffering a flat tire.

The mighty small block modifieds were the next class lined up in the staging area off turn number 2.  Kyle Dingwall and Todd Stewart led the field to the green flag.  As the 30-lap feature progressed, a familiar face started to make his way towards the front, powering to the outside groove, and taking the lead from Kyle Dingwall just past the halfway point of the race.  Obrien started the race in 11th place, and methodically picked his spots, once again proving that he is the guy to beat at the Brockville Speedway in 2009.  Todd Stewart finished a strong second place, followed by Kyle Dingwall, Bill Gill, and Tim Obrien.

The Sportsman class was anxiously awaiting their 25-lap event, and when they pulled onto the track it was Brian Copp and Luke Stewart on the front row as the green flag waived.  Copp, lead the first half of the race, and it appeared that the Ottawa, Ontario racer could be on his way to his first ever sportsman win, until a mid race caution bunched the field up.  A pair of 16-year-olds, Dylan Evoy from his 11th place starting position, and Matt Billings from 14th was on the charge, putting themselves into position to battle Copp for the win.  At the finish, it was Evoy picking up his first win of the season, and second in his young racing career.  Sheldon Hoogwerf finished second, followed by Billings, Shane Pecore, and Dave Wilgosh.

The final event of the evening was the Street Stocks.  Jack Code and Brian Billings led the field to the green flag in the 20-lap event, but at the finish, it was first time winner Brock Cullen driving the race of his life, and putting his beautifully prepared street stock into victory lane.  2008 Street Stock Champion Steve Billings finished second, followed by Kevin Fetterly Jr., Stephane Bussiere, and Bill Code.

Next weekend, Can-Am Motorsports will once again fill my Friday evening schedule, followed by a return to the Brockville Ontario Speedway for Luna Pizzeria night at the track on Saturday.  The night will host a regular program of small block modifieds, sportsman, street stocks, 4cylinder “rookies”, as well as the return of the McNamee Concrete Vintage Modifieds.
